Inside Ayra Starr’s NFL Halftime Show, and What It Says About Afrobeats’ Reach

At halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles-Jacksonville Jaguars game on Sunday, 11 October 2026, Ayra Starr faced a different kind of audience. More than 61,000 spectators had gathered at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London for an American football fixture. For the next few minutes, their attention turned to a Nigerian-born pop star and her catalogue of Afrobeats hits.
Starr opened with “Heaven Baby”, her collaboration with British singer ZAYN, before moving on to “Santa”, “Rush” and “Dangerous”. She closed with a medley of “Hot Body” and “Ms. Paper”, bringing songs from her latest album, Starrgirl, into the NFL’s international entertainment programme.
Photographs from the performance captured her on the elevated stage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while footage of the full halftime show gives a closer look at the production.
The appearance made Starr the first Afrobeats artist to headline an NFL International Game halftime show, according to Live Nation’s post-performance announcement. It was a new platform for the genre, placing one of its most recognisable contemporary voices before an international sporting audience.
But the more interesting question is why the NFL chose her for London.
The NFL’s London Music Strategy
The NFL has spent years building a presence beyond the United States. Its international fixtures have become major entertainment properties, with halftime performances forming part of how the league packages the experience for spectators and television audiences.
The 2026 season takes that approach further, with American Express presenting a record seven halftime shows across seven countries and four continents.
Ayra Starr’s booking was part of that wider programme.
In its official announcement of the halftime performer, the NFL offered a direct explanation through Tim Tubito, its senior director of global game presentation, music and entertainment.
“London is one of the most influential music cities in the world,” he said, adding that African music had been central to that conversation for years.
He also described Starr as a generational talent with a genuine connection to fans in the market.
That explanation changes how we should read the booking. The NFL was looking for an artist who could connect with the cultural character of its London audience. Starr’s relationship with the UK music market made her a strong fit for that objective.
There was also a considerable broadcast opportunity. Her full performance was available live on Channel 5, free-to-air in the UK, as well as on Sky Sports.
The commercial arrangement matters too. American Express was presenting the seven-show international programme, placing live music within a larger sponsorship and fan-engagement strategy.
For the NFL, the halftime show creates another reason for audiences to pay attention to its international fixtures. For the artist, it provides access to viewers who may discover her music through a sporting broadcast rather than a concert or music platform.
What Starrgirl Brought to the Stadium
Starr arrived at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an already established international profile.
The NFL’s announcement credited the Beninese-Nigerian singer with more than seven billion global streams and one billion YouTube views since her 2021 debut. She had also received two Grammy nominations for Best African Music Performance, won BET’s Best International Act award and performed on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.
Her third studio album, Starrgirl, was released on 14 August 2026 and features collaborations with ZAYN, Leon Thomas and Wizkid.
The album had already recorded a strong start. According to Live Nation, it debuted at No. 2 on Spotify’s Global Top Albums chart, earning 3.9 million streams during its first full day. It also reached No. 1 on Apple Music’s album chart in 15 countries.
The NFL performance therefore arrived during an active album campaign.
On Monday 12 October, the day after the London game, Starr announced the Starrgirl World Tour, a 20-city international run scheduled for 2027. The tour announcement from Live Nation confirmed a European leg beginning in Cologne on 20 January, with dates in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, Zurich, Brussels and London. The North American leg follows in March.
Presales began on 13 October, with general ticket sales opening on 16 October.
The timing gave Starrgirl another international promotional moment. However, the tour announcement alone does not establish that the NFL performance generated the demand. The album and its touring plans already existed before the London appearance.
What remains to be seen is whether the exposure translates into measurable new listeners, stronger demand for live performances or further commercial partnerships.
African Female acts are Making Their Presence Felt
Starr’s appearance also belongs to a wider story about African women occupying major international entertainment spaces.
Tems, for example, joined J Balvin and Doja Cat for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup final halftime show at MetLife Stadium in July 2025. Global Citizen produced the performance in partnership with FIFA and supported the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. FIFA’s coverage of the halftime show provides more detail about the performance and its social-impact partnership.
Yemi Alade had also performed at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Côte d’Ivoire in January 2024. She joined Ivorian group Magic System and Egyptian singer Mohamed Ramadan for “Akwaba”, the tournament’s official song.
These appearances provide a useful context for Starr’s achievement. African women are becoming part of the entertainment programming around international sporting events, each reaching different audiences through different platforms.
Ayra Starr’s NFL appearance adds another league and another audience to that picture.
It also gives younger Nigerian artists a contemporary example of how careers built within African music industries can extend into international entertainment and sports.
Football Has Become Another Stage for Afrobeats
The relationship between African music and international football has been developing for some time.
In June 2023, Burna Boy co-headlined the UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show by Pepsi alongside Brazilian singer Anitta in Istanbul. The performance took place ahead of Manchester City’s meeting with Inter Milan and was broadcast in more than 200 countries and territories. UEFA’s announcement of the show outlined the league’s entertainment plans for the final.
Rema’s performance at the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris offered another meeting point between Afrobeats and football’s international audience.
These moments show how sporting events have become valuable platforms for music discovery and cultural marketing.
The business behind them is equally interesting. UEFA’s Champions League show has a long-standing Pepsi partnership. FIFA’s 2025 halftime programme involved Global Citizen and Live Nation, with a social-impact fundraising objective. The NFL’s 2026 programme has American Express as its presenting partner.
Music is being incorporated into the wider commercial experience of major sporting events.
For African sports organisations, there is something to learn from this approach. Local artists can help create more distinctive match-day experiences, but the strongest opportunities come when performances are connected to the event’s wider marketing and broadcast strategy.
A performance can attract attention for a few minutes. An organised campaign can give that attention a longer commercial life.
The Next Stage for Ayra Starr
The NFL appearance gives Starr another entry in an international career that has already taken her from Glastonbury to major music collaborations and now into the league’s international entertainment programme.
It also gives Afrobeats another presence within a sporting institution that reaches audiences far beyond its original American market.
The next part of the story is whether that visibility produces new opportunities for the artist and the wider music industry.
Starr’s next announced London appearance is scheduled for 2 February 2027, when the European leg of her Starrgirl World Tour reaches the city.
This time, the audience will be there specifically for her music.
